ISMC Sections

ISMC stands for Indian Standard Medium Weight Channel — a hot-rolled C-section with a web and two flanges at right angles, produced to IS:808 dimensional standards and IS:2062 material grades. Unlike parallel flange channels (PFC) common in European standards, ISMC sections have a tapered inner flange face, which affects how they mate with plate connections and gussets. Always confirm cross-section type when mixing with imported or fabricated channel sections on the same project.

Both grades are mild steel to IS:2062, but they differ in mechanical properties. Grade A has a minimum yield strength of 250 MPa and is suitable for general structural and fabrication use. Grade B has tighter chemistry controls and improved weldability with a higher tensile range — it is specified for welded structural components and load-bearing applications. For projects with structural drawings that cite IS:2062, always check whether the specification mandates Grade B before procuring Grade A.

Hot-rolled ISMC channels are standardly supplied in 12 metre lengths as per IS:2062 production norms, though 9M and 6M random lengths are available on stock basis. For project-specific requirements such as purlin bays, walkway spans, or rack-frame heights, cut-to-length supply is available for qualifying quantities.
