What Is an
I Beam?

An I Beam — also called an I-section, rolled steel joist (RSJ), or ISMB in Indian standards — is a hot-rolled structural steel section whose cross-section resembles the capital letter "I". It consists of two horizontal plates called flanges connected by a vertical plate called the web. The angle connecting the web to the flanges is the fillet.

In Indian construction, the ISMB designation (Indian Standard Medium Weight Beam) refers specifically to I Beam sections produced to IS:808 dimensional standards. Unlike an H Beam (ISHB), where the web depth and flange width are roughly equal, an ISMB has a web that is significantly deeper than its flange is wide — making it ideal for bending resistance along horizontal spans rather than axial column loads.

The design concentrates steel at the top and bottom flanges, where bending stresses are highest, while the web carries shear. This gives I Beam sections an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio for horizontal spans — which is why they are the standard choice for warehouse rafters, mezzanine floor beams, overhead crane girder rails, and bridge girders.

ISMB sections are readily weldable, drillable, and bolted using standard fabrication equipment. They are typically supplied in 6 metre and 12 metre standard lengths and conform to IS:2062 Grade A material specification.

Why Structural Buyers in Central India Buy I Beam from Us

Not just supply. Controlled sourcing, weight verification, and practical support for buyers who need to get the job done right.

⚖️
Correct Weight Supply
Under-weight I Beam sections silently erode project value. We weigh what we sell — actual dispatch weight matches invoiced weight, not just printed tags.
📋
Mill TC on Every Primary Load
For SAIL and RINL material, mill test certificates with heat number and source traceability are available for projects needing quality documentation and audit compliance.
📐
Dimensional Accuracy
Consistent flange width and web depth across the bundle. We inspect for camber and twist before loading so your fabrication team doesn't pay the price on site.
✂️
Standard & Cut Lengths
We stock 6M and 12M standard lengths. Project-based custom cutting is available for qualifying quantities — useful for warehouses, shed columns, and repetitive portal frames.
🏭
Single Vendor for Full BOQ
Need I Beams, Channels, Angles, TMT, and Pipes on one project? We consolidate multi-product supply on one bill and one dispatch plan, reducing coordination overhead.
🔍
Source Transparency
For commercial grade supply, we disclose source details on request. That helps structural buyers avoid light-weight, scrap-based sections that fail under actual project loads.

FAQ — I Beam Size Chart, Weight & Price

What is ISMB and how is it different from an I Beam or H Beam?
ISMB stands for Indian Standard Medium Weight Beam — the designation for standard rolled I Beam sections per IS:808. An I Beam has a web that is significantly deeper than the flange is wide, making it ideal for resisting bending loads in horizontal spans. An H Beam (ISHB/UC) has wider flanges roughly equal to its depth — better suited for columns carrying vertical axial loads. For most sheds, warehouses, and mezzanines, ISMB is the correct structural specification.
What is the I Beam weight per metre for common ISMB sections?
Common I Beam weight per metre (kg/m) per IS:808: ISMB 100 = 8.9 · ISMB 125 = 13.3 · ISMB 150 = 15.0 · ISMB 200 = 24.2 · ISMB 250 = 37.3 · ISMB 300 = 46.0 · ISMB 350 = 52.4 · ISMB 400 = 61.6 · ISMB 450 = 72.4 · ISMB 500 = 86.9 · ISMB 600 = 123.0. Use our I Beam weight calculator above for exact tonnage based on your quantity and length.
What is the weight tolerance on ISMB sections?
Per IS:1852, the permissible tolerance on sectional weight for ISMB sections is ±2.5%. This means an ISMB 200 weighing 24.2 kg/m may legally range from 23.6 to 24.8 kg/m. For procurement at scale, this tolerance should be factored into BOQ calculations. We bill by actual weighed dispatch — which is why physical weighing before loading matters for every bulk order.
Do you bill I Beam by weight or by number of pieces?
We bill by actual weight in metric tons. For structural buyers, this matters because under-weight I Beam sections are common in the market and quietly destroy project margins. Our dispatch weight matches invoiced weight — we weigh before loading.
Can I get a mill test certificate (MTC) with the I Beam?
Yes. For SAIL and RINL / Vizag primary material, mill test certificates with heat number and chemical/mechanical properties are available. If your project or tender requires source compliance, mention it at enquiry stage so supply is confirmed from a primary-grade inventory from the start.
What lengths do you supply and is custom cutting available?
Standard stock is available in 6 metre and 12 metre lengths, subject to section size and source availability. Custom cutting to project lengths can be arranged for qualifying bulk quantities — useful for portal frames, shed columns, and repetitive structural elements.
How often does the I Beam price change and what affects it?
I Beam price is market-linked and can change daily based on SAIL and RINL mill price revisions, scrap and billet rates, demand from infrastructure and housing sectors, and freight costs. We provide same-day rate quotes on WhatsApp — always get a fresh rate before placing a bulk order rather than relying on older quotations.
What is the difference between ISMB and Jindal UB sections?
ISMB (Indian Standard Medium Weight Beam) follows IS:808 with specific Indian section dimensions. Jindal also produces UB (Universal Beam) sections following British/European standards, which have parallel flanges and different depth-to-flange ratios. Jindal UB sections are available in several weights per section size — for example, ISMB 250×125 has one standard weight, while Jindal offers multiple UB 254 variants ranging from 25 to 43 kg/m. If your drawing specifies a UB section, confirm the exact weight and flange dimensions before ordering.
