04What Is an
MS Channel?
A mild steel channel, commonly known as an MS Channel, MS C-Channel, or MS U-Channel, is a hot-rolled structural steel section with a C-shaped or U-shaped cross-section — a vertical web with two horizontal flanges extending on the same side. The ISMC (Indian Standard Medium Weight Channel) designation refers specifically to channels rolled to IS:808 dimensional standards with material conforming to IS:2062.
MS Channels have a tapered inner flange face — unlike European parallel flange channels (PFC) — which affects how they connect with gusset plates and welded connections. This is important to note when combining with imported or fabricated sections on mixed-standard projects.
The moderate carbon content (C max 0.20%) makes MS Channel readily weldable, drillable, and cuttable with standard fabrication equipment, without requiring special preheat for most thicknesses. This versatility makes ISMC the default structural section for industrial shed frames, roof purlins, mezzanine floors, cable trays, and conveyor supports across manufacturing and infrastructure projects.

Specify by Load Requirement, Not by Habit.
IS:2062 Grade A and Grade B differ in tensile strength and yield point. For structural frames carrying calculated design loads, Grade B is the safer specification. Grade A suits general fabrication where load calculations are informal.
