Solid Bars

Both are circular mild steel bars, but they serve fundamentally different purposes. MS Round Bar (IS:2062) is a solid, hot-rolled bar intended for fabrication, machining, forging, and general structural use — not for embedding in concrete as reinforcement. TMT Bar (IS:1786) has a ribbed surface and a thermomechanically treated core that gives it the high yield strength required for RCC construction. Using MS round bars as slab or column reinforcement instead of TMT is a specification violation and a structural risk.

The standard formula is: (π/4) × Dia(mm)² × 0.00000785 kg/mm. Simplified: Dia(mm)² × 0.006165 kg/m. For a 25mm round bar: 25² × 0.006165 = 3.853 kg per metre. Both grades are weldable mild steel, but Grade B has a lower maximum carbon content (0.20% vs 0.23%) and tighter sulphur and phosphorus limits. This gives Grade B predictably better weldability, improved machinability consistency, and more reliable behaviour under heat treatment or forging. For gate grills, dowels, and non-critical pins, Grade A is adequate. For shafts, axles, turned components, and welded load-bearing assemblies, always specify Grade B.

Yes. IS:2062 mild steel round bars are fully machinable using standard HSS and carbide tooling. They can be turned on a lathe, centre-drilled, threaded, knurled, and case-hardened. For precision diameter work — tight shaft tolerances, splined outputs, or journal bearing seats — the hot-rolled scale should be machined off first. For applications requiring very tight tolerances from the start, cold-drawn bright bars are a better starting material than hot-rolled MS round.

MS Round bars are typically stocked in 6 metre and 12 metre random lengths. Smaller diameters (6mm to 20mm) are commonly available in 6M lengths. Medium and larger diameters (25mm and above) are standard mill output in 12M lengths. Cut-to-length supply is available for qualifying project quantities — useful for shaft blanks, pin batches, and component manufacturing where a defined piece length reduces turning waste.

MS Round Bar (hot-rolled) has a rough, oxidised surface from rolling and dimensional tolerances of ±0.5mm or more. Bright Bar (cold-drawn) is produced by drawing hot-rolled rod through a die, which gives a smooth, clean surface, tighter dimensional tolerances (±0.1mm or better), improved straightness, and slightly higher yield strength from cold-working. Bright bar costs more but saves machining time when tolerance and surface finish matter from the start.
